Overheard at Banana Republic

I was in the dressing room at Banana Republic during my lunch hour and heard the following exchange by two women on the sales staff:

"My family and I went to Vesuvio last night."
"Oh, where's that?" the other woman asked.
"In North Beach. It's where Jack Kerouac and the other beat poets would meet."
"Who's Jack Kerouac?"
"You know the guy who wrote 'On the Road'."
"I've never heard of it."
"You've never heard of On the Road? Or Jack Kerouac? He was a member of the beat poets, they were a big influence on people coming to the city."
"You mean during the Gold Rush?"
"No, during the 60s."
"You sound old," said the woman.
"I'm not old. I'm just cultured. There's nothing wrong with being cultured."
"Whatever."
